The long search for backlinks

To get a higher Pagerank (or to increase traffic), getting backlinks to your site is very important. You need as many as possible, because the more the better, right?

Here are some of the techniques I recommend for getting backlinks.

Forums
This is a good method. If you put a link to your website in your forum signature, then not only will you get a backlink from every topic you create or post in, but other members may also click the link, so you get traffic too!

Blogs
This is like the previous technique. In a blog (like this one), you can make a suitable comment into the blog so its accepted, but make sure that you put your website address in the Website URL box (Most blogs have them). That way, you’ll get an easy backlink.

Link Directories
This can be quite time-consuming, but its effective. If you do a simple search on Google for Web Directories, you shall get a long list of them. Basically, a link directory is a website with lots of website links in. Just make sure your website is suitable for the Terms & Conditions of the directory, choose a suitable category and fill it in. There are some links to directories on the sidebar.

Link Paying
Not a recommended method because Google doesn’t seem to like people doing this, but you can buy links from other people to gain backlinks. Places like these are where you can find this.

Link Exchange
Very similar to Link Paying, but instead, you do a link swap, so you put a link to their website on yours, and vice-versa. That way, you both get traffic and you both get backlinks. This is a more-common technique used.

Digg!
If you have a blog, article or a content-rich webpage, you can submit it to Digg.com to gain quite a bit of traffic if its unique. Digg.com backlinks may be nofollow (not 100% sure) so if they are, it won’t be much use to you but at least the traffic is good.

Social Bookmarking
If you look near the bottom of this tutorial, you’ll see a few links that let you bookmark this site, such as StumbleUpon and Del.icio.us. If you get people to Write about you in their blog on these sort of sites, you can gain backlinks from pretty much everyone who does this. Traffic helps too.

Plugins and Skins
If you’re a good programmer on the PC, try making a plugin or a theme for a main script, eg. Wordpress or an even better choice, a Content Management System like e107 (Google it). Put a link back on your site on the design, and the more websites that your plugin/theme is used on, the more backlinks you’ll get. This is a method that not everyone can do, but its highly recommended.

Relevancy

Google values a backlink more if the website that your link is on is of similar content to yours. For example, if your website is about games, its better to get backlinks from other game websites. Its not difficult to find these places unless your niche is very unique (highly unlikely). Searches on Google should do the trick for you.
