The Full Guide to Making Money (from a Website)

Okay, so this is the second course on Site SEO.

This guide will hopefully explain in easy steps on how to make money from a website. It will follow basic steps from how to start your website running and then onto actually making the money. The start of the course will be quite basic so even amateurs or even new people who haven’t made a site before can join in.

Step 1 - Think!
Get your thinking caps on! You need to think of an idea for a website, and its niche. I suggest choosing a type of website that you like to make and not choose something because it pays high in ad programs. Make sure you think about it because it makes a big difference.

Once you’ve thought of an idea for your website and its niche, you can get started.

Step 2 - Register
Now that you have an idea for your website, you need to obtain the actual domain name that your site will be displayed in. You’re going to have to spend a small bit of money for this, but it will be worth it in the end. Depending on the domain you want, it may cost you between $6 and $12 a year, which isn’t that bad. I recommend registering from Spacial Hosting or Triple. Look at the Web Domain tutorial here on Site SEO Blog for information on what domain to register.

Step 3 - Hosting
Once the domain has been registered, you need hosting for this domain. You could get Shared Hosting for around $3 - $6 a month maybe. It will probably cost different, depending on the specifications your hosting company offer. I would recommend Spacial Hosting once again, as I’ve had good experiences with them.

Once hosting has been setup, you need to get the hosting companies nameservers and then change the nameservers of your domain registrar to those given.

Step 4 - Create
Okay, so your website is all setup now. You can pretty much do what you like with it. Now, this is where your website idea comes in. You need to actually create your idea!

I recommend doing it as a blog or a forum about the subject of your choice because these are the easiest ways really.

If you choose to do it as a blog, download Wordpress and follow the installation instructions.

If you choose to do it as a forum, download phpbb and follow the installation instructions.

If you choose to run it as a normal website, you’ll need to learn how to create one if you don’t already. You’ll need HTML and possibly PHP knowledge. You can learn that at W3Schools.

Now, you have your website registered, hosted, and you have your preferred website setup. Now here is where this tutorial gets more complicated. If you’re using a blog, go to the blog steps. If you’re using a forum, go to the forum steps. If its a normal site, go to the site steps.

BLOG STEPS

Step 5 - Adsense
So you now run a blog. You’re going to need to get adsense ads on there! Go to Google Adsense and make an account for your blog. As the website URL, put the website in. Now, its going to take over a week for them to review you, so you’re going to need to make some blog posts so your blog has content. If you don’t do these posts, they will probably reject you.

*Wait for e-mail*

Okay, so you should have an accepted adsense account now. Login, and start creating some google ads that matches your blogs site design. To place these ads on your blog, you could either edit the template files (Advanced) or you could just install a Wordpress Plugin that will handle all of this hassle for you. I recommend using All-in-one Adsense and YPN.

Now you should have Google Ads on your blog. This plugin should place them in google positions for you too.

Step 6 - Write!
You need to write on your blog regularly if you are going to keep users visiting. You also need to make sure that the posts you do make are relevant to the subject you’re working on and that they are something that others would want to read and know about. Think to yourself whether you would want to read the post you’re about to make if you’re a viewer. It will help you to understand what people want.

Step 7 - The Advertising
Now that you have content that people would like to read, obviously you need to tell people about your website so that they can visit it. Some methods that you could use are:

  • Unique, Exciting Posts - Make valuble posts that are your own. People want unique content! Make sure you write about things that people will want to read about too!
  • Pay For Links - Although companies like Google don
