Multiple Character Cases in URLs

I’ve often seen on various websites where capital letters are used in URLs for pages. For example, site.com/Website.html rather than site.com/website.html.

Using this can generate quite a few problems actually, more than you’d think for just a one letter difference.

For example, people just won’t remember pages with capital letters in. If you ask numerous people, they find it a lot easier when its all just lower case, and basically everyone remembers it as lower case, so you could actually lose traffic on those pages just because people can’t remember it.

Another problem that could be seen is related to Search Engines. Search Engines such as Google may see your website as duplicate content if you have two pages with the same name but one with a capital letter instead. This might not happen, but its a risk that there is no point in taking.

In conclusion, if you are one of the few people who use upper case characters in URLs, my advice to you is to change it immediately. It has no positives of using, and will cause you more problems than it is worth.

How to get onto the digg frontpage!

Here are some tips on how to get loads of diggs and to hopefully get your website on the frontpage of digg, for traffic reasons.

1. Microsoft suck - You may not think this (and I certainly don’t) but Digg users seem to love it - so try to make an article including this.

2. Mension Digg - Write an article about Digg. Digg users seem to love this, nobody quite knows why.

3. How-To - Digg Users also seem to like how-to articles where they actually learn something from it.

4. Latest News - If you’re one of the first to announce an important piece of news, then it is bound to get diggs!

5. Friends Digging - Ask friends to digg your article. It may not give you much, but it may give you that start that your article needs.

6. Digg Swaps - This is not at all recommended, but I’ve seen people do it. Go on popular forums and do swaps with people where you digg their article, they digg yours.

7. Catchy Title - Make the title catchy so that people would actually want to visit your article. Nobody will visit it if its just a boring title. Make it stand out!

8. Offending People - Offend people. Maybe you aren’t that sort of person, but people love it when you offend or insult other people, such as George Bush for example.

9. Good Layout - Layout your article in a nice way, such as bullet points, numbering, images etc… Nobody these days would like to digg an article that is just paragraph after paragraph. Maybe its good for some users, but its not for the Digg Community.

There are some tips on how to get onto the frontpage. If you follow these tips and put in some effort, you might just be one of the lucky people who end up on the frontpage. Good luck!

Google Analytics Vs AWStats

Both Google Analytics and AWStats provide interesting stats for your website - regarding the traffic you receive. Both programs are free - but which one is better?

On the one hand, Google Analytics is the best because it provides more information on the countries that the traffic comes from, and it also provides very smooth graphs to show the total traffic. It also shows more in-depth information on which pages your visitors go to and what they don’t so you can see which sections of your websites you need to get more traffic for. One of the best things about Analytics is the Goal Management. You can select which page where a goal is completed so you can traffic how many people complete an action that you want them to.

On the other hand, AWStats is the best because it provides a lot of information on the Search Engines that have visited your website and how many times they’ve visited your website and your robots.txt file. There is also lots of little information you may be interested in - such as which internet browsers are the most popular for visiting your website. It provides all the key information that you could possibly need, such as traffic, countries etc… plus lots of small information.

In conclusion, Google Analytics is the best because it provides the information about your website in a very user-friendly way thats easy to recognise and see how you’re doing. The information it provides is a lot neater, and the goals feature is wonderful if you’re tracking sales or where they go from pages. Both programs are good, and both are free.
