CMS - Use Them or Not?
CMS (Content Management Systems) are the quick way to run a website. Examples of these are e107 and Joomla. All of the things you need are put into one simple script - Banner Advertising, Pages, Plugins etc… and its normally easy to follow. However, should you use these or not?
On the one hand, you should use them because they’re really easy and quick to use. You can just go to one URL, login to the admin panel and edit everything. They look decent, and some CMS’s have no ads shown on your website, so it looks like you’ve done it on your own. 99% of CMS’s are also free, which is why they are so popular. Plugins and Templates can easily be found on the internet too, which means its easy to customize your website.
On the other hand, you shouldn’t use them because as most people see them, they are the easy way out of actually putting in hard work. It shows to some people that you aren’t putting in effort into your website, and its likely to reduce your traffic just for using one. Thats one of the main problems for a CMS - A lot of people dislike them. Unfriendly URL’s can also spoil the website, and quite a few CMS’s make it difficult to do decent on Google. Just with that its set you back a lot, but to make it even worse, e107 doesn’t seem to like different sorts of scripts being in use, like with some templates, the script will break if you put Google Adsense on, forcing you to use a plugin for it or to just display it normally on a page, which is a real shame.
In Conclusion, I recommend not using CMS’s because they are the easy way out of making a great website, and these have so many disadvantages, that you might as well stop wasting your valuble time and make a proper website!
